Park County is Summit County’s next-door neighbor to the south. Quite a few Summit County workers choose to live in the towns of Alma and Fairplay, where the pace of life is a bit quieter. Park County’s high alpine meadow topography is rimmed by mountain peaks, some reaching over 14,000 feet – affording spectacular views from any direction. Dozens of lakes and streams crisscross the area, making it a haven for fly fishing. Many working ranches still operate in the wide open spaces.
Park County has also gained recognition for its mountaineering challenges and as a haven for off-road vehicle enthusiasts. Then of course there’s the camping, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, rock collecting . . . and too many more activities to list!
History buffs can find literally hundreds of old structures built by miners and settlers. The town of Fairplay is famous for its South Park City Museum, opened in 1958. Featuring 37 buildings and over 60,000 artifacts from the late 1800’s, the outdoor museum’s village atmosphere feels like taking a trip back in time.
Park County has more territory above 9,000 feet than any other Colorado county, with Federal lands comprising 51 percent of its landmass. State-owned lands make up 8 percent and privately-owned lands 41 percent. Three wilderness areas, two state parks, and twelve state wildlife areas call Park County home.
